It was a very impressive ride by Mike Smith Saturday afternoon at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, CA. If you haven't seen the show, Jockeys (Friday, 8PM EST Animal Planet), I highly recommend it if you love horse racing. There was a point in the show when he was riding Zenyatta that his worst fear was screwing up her perfect record. He feels that if she loses it isn't her fault. Rather, he takes the responsibility for the horse getting the proper trip and getting her in the right position to succeed. The same could be said this season. He had the terrific two year-old filly, champion Stardom Bound with Derby aspirations running in her first three year-old race this past Saturday. She broke dead last in a field of six. He moved her up on the rail on the back stretch within three lengths of the leader. He got her into a little bit of trouble on the far turn, but split horses and had a ton of momentum as the filly hit the final quarter pole. She rallied like the champion she is and won by a little over a length.
Michael Iavarone of IEAH Stables has pointed her towards the Santa Anita Derby, the top prep race for California horses looking to become one of the contenders of the biggest race of the year.
America should not criticize this team for pointing a filly towards the Derby because of what happened to Eight Belles last year. This filly is the real deal and I can't wait to see how she does against the boys in the next couple months.
I have a feeling America could be in for a fun ride with this filly this Spring. After I saw the move she made in the Breeders Cup, my eyes have been on this one.
